What to expect from an art therapy session…
-
What are you bringing in to session that day? I’ll check in to see what’s important, what’s urgent, and help identify an area of focus.
-
I’ll provide a variety of options to choose from. Want to stick to a favorite material? Or perhaps you’re eager to try out something new? I’ll be there to help guide material choice and use, whether you’re a novice or experienced art maker.
-
In our sessions, you'll have the opportunity to create artwork in a supportive and non-judgmental space. The focus is not on artistic skill but on the creative process. Through using a variety of art materials, you can communicate things that may be difficult to express verbally.
-
Through colors, shapes, and images, we’ll explore feelings and experiences, delving into the unconscious mind for profound insights. Art therapy offers a non-verbal expression that empowers you to externalize internal experiences, promoting mindfulness and self-awareness.
-
Homework assignments provide a unique opportunity for continued self-expression and exploration. Engage in artistic practices between sessions to deepen your insights and enhance your personal growth. During our time together, we'll regularly review and discuss your artwork, offering a structured approach to assess progress, identify patterns, and celebrate milestones.

Common questions about art therapy
-
The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as “a mental health profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.”
In more conversational language, I have 10+ years of formal education and supervision in helping you to:
use art to express things that are hard to put words to
help you get out of your head and into your body through engaging with art materials
teach you what people actually mean when they say “feel your feelings”
-
No problem! The only thing needed is a willingness to engage with art materials.
-
Engaging in art therapy face-to-face allows me to offer a broader array of materials and a more curated creative environment.
If there are obstacles to your ability to attend sessions in person, let's discuss together and explore whether telehealth or a hybrid schedule (combining in-person and telehealth sessions) would work for you.
